A virtuous economic publishing model
Since January 1, 2020, Académie des sciences' Comptes Rendus are published in Diamond Open Access, free of charge for authors (no Article Processing Charges to pay) as well as for readers (all articles are freely accessible without subscription, and reusable under a Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license).
This diamond model is made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Académie with the Mersenne Center for Open Scientific Publishing, which publishes the Mathématique, Physique, Mécanique, Chimie, Géoscience and Biologies series, as well as with the National Museum of Natural History, co-publisher of the Palevol series.

A quality stamp for Comptes Rendus: the DOAJ Seal
The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) is a bibliographic database launched in 2003 that lists online scientific journals that meet certain quality and open access criteria:
- articles available in full text ;
- freely accessible articles ;
- peer-reviewed articles (= only scientific journals intended for a research audience are included).
The DOAJ covers all disciplines and languages. As of October 2024, it includes almost 21,000 journals, 13,700 of which are Diamond Open Access (no APC required), in 80 languages, from 136 different countries.
Of all these journals, around 10% have been awarded a special distinction: the DOAJ Seal. This seal is specially awarded to journals that demonstrate best open science practices in terms of long-term preservation, use of permanent identifiers, discoverability, reuse policies and copyright.
The Comptes Rendus Mathématique, Mécanique, Physique, Géoscience, Chimie and Biologies series were all awarded the DOAJ Seal in 2022, making them among the most progressive journals in terms of open science at international level.
Our former issues in open access
Since summer 2023, issues published between 2002 and 2019 in collaboration with Elsevier have also been made available in open access, directly on the sites of each series. The articles in these issues can be reused under a Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license. The Académie des Sciences would like to express its sincere thanks to the Elsevier France team, and in particular to its Chairman Daniel Rodriguez, who made this republication possible.
