  • Ce numéro thématique des Comptes rendus Chimie fait suite à la deuxième conférence internationale de l'Institut des métaux en biologie de Grenoble (IMBG), dédiée aux « Métaux en biocatalyse: des métalloenzymes aux systèmes bio-inspirés ». Les métaux sont impliqués dans de nombreux processus biologiques essentiels pour le Vivant. Ils interviennent au sein de métalloenzymes sélectives et efficaces, qui catalysent des réactions chimiques fascinantes. Afin de comprendre les mécanismes mis en jeu à un niveau moléculaire, il est alors essentiel d'approfondir notre connaissance de la structure et de la réactivité de ces complexes métalliques, grâce à l'effort conjoint des chimistes, qui développent des systèmes bio-inspirés, des biochimistes, qui étudient les systèmes biologiques, ainsi que des spectroscopistes et des théoriciens. Les travaux suivants (élaboration d'enzymes artificielles et de modèles bio-inspirés, activation du dioxygène par des enzymes à cuivre, rôle des métaux chez les enzymes radicalaires, caractérisation spectroscopique des clusters fer–soufre et étude par DFT du mécanisme des hydrogénases) témoignent du caractère pluridisciplinaire de ce domaine de recherche, qui est devenu majeur à l'interface de la chimie et de la biologie.

  • This thematic issue of the Comptes rendus Chimie follows the second international congress of the Institute of Metals in Biology of Grenoble (IMBG) dedicated to the “Metals in biocatalysis: from metalloenzymes to bio-inspired systems”. Metals are implicated in a variety of biological pathways, essential for life. They are involved in the active sites of selective and efficient metalloenzymes for catalyzing fascinating chemical reactions. To understand the mechanisms at the molecular level, it is essential to improve our knowledge regarding the structure and the reactivity of these metal complexes through the joined efforts of chemists, who develop bio-inspired systems, of biochemists, who investigate the biological systems, as well as of spectroscopists and theoreticians. The following studies (elaboration of artificial enzymes and bio-inspired systems, activation of dioxygen by copper enzymes, role of metals in radical enzymes, spectroscopic characterization of iron–sulphur enzymes, and DFT calculations on the hydrogenase mechanism) underlined the multidisciplinary character of this field, which emerged as a major field in chemical biology.
