  • C'est avec beaucoup de plaisir que nous avons accepté l'invitation de Pierre Braunstein, rédacteur en chef du journal de chimie de l'Académie des sciences, à éditer un numéro thématique des Comptes rendus Chimie. Nous avons choisi de le dédier à un domaine de recherches en pleine expansion, la production et l'oxydation d'hydrogène par des catalyseurs bio-inspirés. La mise au point de procédés permettant de produire ou d'oxyder l'hydrogène selon des voies économiquement et écologiquement viables est en effet un enjeu majeur dans la perspective du développement d'une économie s'appuyant sur l'hydrogène en tant que vecteur énergétique. Ce numéro thématique intitulé Bio-inspired hydrogen production/uptake catalysis, est consacré aux travaux que développent les chimistes dans ce domaine pluridisciplinaire, situé à l'interface entre la chimie et la biologie, pour concevoir et étudier de nouvelles molécules inspirées des sites actifs des hydrogénases à fer seul et à nickel–fer. Les objectifs des études expérimentales et théoriques sont de parvenir à une meilleure compréhension des mécanismes mis en jeu et d'accéder, à moyen terme, à des électrocatalyseurs pour la production ou l'oxydation d'hydrogène dont l'efficacité approcherait celle des systèmes naturels. Nous remercions très chaleureusement Pierre Braunstein pour son invitation, ainsi que tous les collègues dont la participation a permis l'édition de ce numéro thématique qui, nous l'espérons, contribuera à illustrer différents aspects des recherches effectuées dans de ce domaine en permanente évolution.

  • It was a great pleasure for us to accept the invitation of Pierre Braunstein, Editor-in-Chief of the Comptes Rendus Chimie, to guest-edit this thematic issue. We chose to devote it to an exciting field of research, which concerns the production and the oxidation of hydrogen by bio-inspired catalysts. Indeed, the development of economic and ecological processes of hydrogen production/uptake is a major goal in the perspective of a hydrogen economy. This thematic issue, entitled Bio-inspired hydrogen production/uptake catalysis, is dedicated to the chemists' efforts, in this multidisciplinary field at the interface of chemistry and biology, to conceive and to study new molecules inspired by the active sites of the [NiFe] and [FeFe] hydrogenases. The ultimate purpose of these theoretical and experimental studies is to achieve efficient electrocatalysts for the production or the oxidation of hydrogen through a better understanding of the mechanisms implied at the molecular level. We thank Pierre Braunstein very warmly for his invitation, as well as all the colleagues whose contributions allowed the edition of this thematic issue, which, we hope, will contribute to illustrate different aspects of the research performed by chemists in this challenging field.
