[Conceptualization and classification of fatigue problems]
In this article, conceptualization and classification of fatigue problems (in the framework of the Damage Mechanics) are made. Structural loadings induce a local temporal evolution of the “leading” state variable but not vice versa. This argument demonstrates why we should first classify fatigue problems by using structural quantities. The evolution laws, however, are written on the local level: therefore, we provide a classification of fatigue problems based on local quantities. Our ultimate aim is to help to justify a local form of a fatigue evolution law starting from its quasistatic form deduced from Thermodynamics.
