[Some control parameters for Floating Zone growth under μg conditions]
The solid/liquid transition during crystal growth by a floating zone technique is analysed under microgravity conditions. The control of this technique by considering heating conditions and pulling velocity is studied. The difficulty attached to the phase change transition is surmounted by the use of an enthalpy–porosity formulation. The spatial distribution of the applied heating at the free surface strongly affects the dynamics of the system, the shape and position of the interface. The increase in the energy density reduces the response time of the fluid phase appearance in the transient regime. The flow near the singularity line depends more on the total energy than on the flux distribution.
